How to choose a personal trainer: coach arriving at a client villa in Dubai

A good personal trainer can change how you train, eat and feel. The wrong one can cost you months, money and motivation. Dubai has a huge choice of trainers, so here’s what to look for before you book.

1. Be clear on your goal first

Fat loss, muscle, strength, calisthenics, mobility, getting fit after a baby, training your kids? Different trainers specialise in different things. Knowing what you want makes it much easier to judge who fits.

2. Check certifications and experience

  • Ask what they’re certified in and where they studied. A recognised personal training qualification is the baseline.
  • Look for relevant experience: years of coaching, and experience with people like you, whether that’s beginners, older clients, kids or athletes.
  • Specialist skills matter for specialist goals: nutrition, calisthenics, rehab-friendly training and so on.

3. Ask how they will assess you

A good trainer starts by understanding you: your goals, training history, injuries, schedule and current level. Be cautious of anyone who hands you a generic plan before they’ve seen you move.

4. Look for a plan, not just a workout

Each session should fit into a bigger picture. Ask how they plan progress over weeks, and how they’ll adjust things when you hit a plateau or have a busy month.

5. Ask how progress is tracked

Weight alone isn’t enough. Strong coaches track things like body measurements, strength, technique and how you feel, and they review them with you regularly.

6. Watch how they coach technique

Safe, clear coaching on form is non-negotiable. A good trainer explains why you’re doing an exercise, corrects you clearly and adjusts movements to suit your body.

7. Make sure the logistics fit your life

  • Location: do you want a gym, or would a trainer who comes to your home, building gym or local park be easier?
  • Timing: early mornings, lunch breaks, evenings?
  • Pricing: are packages clear, with no hidden extras?

8. Try before you commit

A trial session is the best way to judge chemistry, communication and coaching style. You should leave it feeling understood, challenged and safe, with a clear idea of what comes next.

Red flags to watch for

  • Promises of extreme results in very little time
  • Pushing supplements or crash diets
  • Ignoring injuries, pain or your medical history
  • No plan, no tracking and no clear answers
  • Pressure to sign a long package before you’ve trained together

Questions to ask on your first call

  1. What are your qualifications and how long have you been coaching?
  2. Have you worked with clients with goals like mine?
  3. How do you assess a new client?
  4. How will we measure progress?
  5. Where and when can we train?
  6. What’s included in the price?

Before you choose a personal trainer

When you choose a personal trainer, look for someone who will help you reach healthy activity levels safely. The NHS physical activity guidelines recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week plus strength work on 2 or more days.
